Short answer: YouTube’s help page says that if you misrepresent your location, for example by using a VPN, or try to get around availability restrictions, your Premium subscription may be cancelled. Prices and plans depend on your country, so signing up from another country with a VPN risks losing the subscription you pay for.

What YouTube says
YouTube’s page on Premium locations and travel states several things:
- Premium memberships are available in the countries and territories it lists, and what you get can change by location.
- When you travel outside your subscription country, your membership benefits may change based on your location.
- If you travel to a country where Premium is not available, you cannot use your membership benefits there.
- If you misrepresent your location (the page gives VPN use as an example) or try to circumvent availability restrictions, your subscription may be cancelled.
- If you travel for more than 30 days or move to another country or territory, YouTube may take action on your subscription, such as cancelling it.
Why the price depends on where you live
YouTube sets prices and plans by country, which is why people look at VPNs for cheaper access. YouTube’s terms are clear that you should state your country accurately so it can offer the correct plans and prices. A VPN does not change which country your payment profile belongs to, and YouTube also says you cannot change the country of an existing payments profile.
The practical risks of signing up through a VPN
- Cancellation. YouTube says it may cancel the subscription.
- Payment trouble. A card from one country used for a plan in another country can fail or be flagged.
- Losing what you paid for. Prepaid time may be lost if a plan is cancelled; check your plan’s terms.
Legitimate ways to pay less
- Family plan. YouTube says each family member must live at the same address as the family manager, with a check-in every 30 days. It is a saving only for people who actually share a home.
- Other plans in your own country. Check whether an individual, student or lite plan exists where you live; availability and prices differ.
- Plan length and promotions. Look for official offers on YouTube’s own pages.
Traveling with Premium
Short trips are usually fine, but YouTube says benefits may change by location. If you will be abroad for more than 30 days, or you move, expect the subscription to be reviewed. If you move permanently, update your payments profile properly instead of using a VPN.
Using a VPN for privacy while watching
