Short answer: Prime Video’s own help pages tell users to turn off any VPN or proxy when playback fails, and say that add-on subscriptions can only be streamed from within your home country. We did not test any VPN with Prime Video, so this page does not claim that any VPN works with it.
Checked on October 5, 2026 against Prime Video help pages. Detection methods and VPN success rates are not published by Amazon, so none are quoted here.
What Amazon says
In its troubleshooting steps for playback problems, Prime Video tells you to deactivate any VPN or proxy servers. A second help page covers streaming abroad and makes three points:
- Add-on subscriptions are only available to stream from within your home country.
- While you travel outside your home country, the selection of titles you can stream may change.
- Only titles you have purchased or rented may be streamed while you are outside your country of residence.
What a VPN does and does not change
A VPN changes the address Prime Video sees. It does not change your account’s home country, or which titles Amazon licenses for each region. If Prime Video treats VPN addresses as unsupported, a VPN can make playback worse, not better. For the general limits, see VPN blocks and detection.
If Prime Video will not play
- Turn off any VPN or proxy and try again, as Amazon’s help page says.
- Check that your device’s date and time are set automatically.
- Restart the device and the app, and try another network if you can.
- If you were using a VPN for privacy on public Wi-Fi, use your VPN’s split tunneling to exclude the Prime Video app, if it offers that.
Traveling with a Prime account
Expect a different selection abroad and, for add-on channels, expect no access at all outside your home country, according to Amazon. If you will be away and want to watch something specific, buying or renting it first is the one option Amazon’s page says continues to work abroad.
Fire TV and other devices
If you watch on a Fire TV, the same rules apply, and a VPN on the device can cause the same playback error. Best VPN for Firestick covers VPN apps on Fire TV devices, and free VPN for Firestick covers the limits of free ones.

The full troubleshooting checklist from Amazon
The VPN step is one of several on Amazon’s help page for playback that freezes, stops responding or buffers. In the order Amazon gives them:
- Close the Prime Video app, or the browser if you are watching on a computer, and open it again.
- Check that the time and date on your device are correct and set to automatic.
- Deactivate any VPN or proxy servers.
- Turn off the device and wait at least 60 seconds before turning it back on.
- Update your browser and device, and make sure the Prime Video app is up to date.
- Check that the same account is not in use on too many devices. Amazon says the same title can be streamed to only two devices at a time.
- Pause other internet activity, especially if other devices are using the network.
- Check your internet connection and restart your router if needed.
- Uninstall and reinstall the app.
- As a last resort, reset the device to factory settings.
Seen in that list, a VPN is only one possible cause of a playback error, so a failed stream is not always the VPN’s fault. If you turn the VPN off and the problem remains, work down the rest of the steps before changing anything else.
If you run a VPN on your router
A VPN configured on a router applies to every device on the network, including your TV or streaming stick. If Prime Video fails on all of them at once, the router’s VPN is the first thing to switch off for a test. Many routers let you exclude individual devices from the VPN, so check your router’s documentation before you leave it off for everyone.
