KasperskyNot currently purchasable in the U.S.
Works on:Not sold to U.S. customers

Strong independent lab scores, but banned from retail sale to U.S. consumers by the U.S. Commerce Department since September 2024.

  • U.S. Commerce Dept. (BIS) banned new retail sale of Kaspersky software to U.S. persons, effective Sept. 29, 2024 -- this ban remains in effect
  • Existing U.S. customers were migrated to a different product ("UltraAV") in Sept. 2024, a move that drew its own criticism for lacking clear consent
  • Outside the U.S., Kaspersky's lab scores remain strong: AV-TEST 18/18 (Q1 2026), AV-Comparatives 99.94% detection, Top-Rated Product 2025
  • Included here for informational completeness only -- we are not recommending a purchase U.S. readers cannot legally make

How We Compare Antivirus Software

Based on independently-published lab results (AV-TEST, AV-Comparatives) and disclosed real-world complaints, not a composite score we generated ourselves.

🛡

Malware Detection Rate

We look at recent AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives results specifically -- not a vague "top-rated" claim. A single strong test cycle is good; a consistent multi-cycle record is better.

System Performance Impact

Independently-measured low CPU/battery overhead matters, especially on older hardware. We only credit this when it comes from a lab result, not marketing copy.

🔒

Privacy Toolkit

Some suites bundle a VPN, password manager, and identity monitoring in the base plan; others sell them as costly add-ons. We check which is which per provider.

💳

Pricing, Renewals & Complaints

Intro prices are often discounted, then renew much higher. We also disclose real, documented billing or marketing complaints where they exist, rather than omitting them.

👪

Device Coverage

Count your phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops. Some providers offer unlimited-device plans, which can be better value for larger households.

Legal Availability

A strong lab score doesn't matter if the product can't legally be purchased where you live -- see Kaspersky's U.S. sale restriction, for example.

Why Trust This Comparison

🔍
Every lab score cited on this page comes from AV-TEST or AV-Comparatives' own published results, linked where possible -- not an in-house test we invented.
Independently sourced
Where a provider has a documented billing dispute, false-positive issue, or legal restriction (like Kaspersky's U.S. ban), we say so directly rather than only listing positives.
Real complaints disclosed
🔄
Lab results shift every test cycle. We cite the specific month/year of each score so you can judge how current it is, rather than a vague "tested in 2026" claim.
Updated when labs update
🔒
We may earn a commission if you purchase through a link on this page. That relationship never determines which lab results we cite or which complaints we disclose.

Antivirus FAQ

Do I really need an antivirus in 2026?
Windows Defender has improved a lot, but independent lab tests (AV-TEST, AV-Comparatives) still generally show dedicated paid suites like Bitdefender and Norton scoring as well or better on zero-day detection, and they bundle features Defender does not offer, like identity monitoring or a password manager.
Is free antivirus good enough?
Free antivirus tools generally cover basic malware detection but leave out extras like a VPN, password manager, dark web monitoring, or ransomware rollback. Whether that trade-off is worth a paid plan depends on what you actually need beyond basic protection.
Which antivirus is best for Mac?
Macs are still exposed to adware, phishing, and cross-platform threats. Bitdefender, Norton, and TotalAV (with the caveats noted in its listing above) all have native Mac apps with real independent lab data behind them.
Will antivirus slow down my PC?
It varies by engine. Bitdefender and ESET have consistently strong, independently-verified low-impact scores. Webroot markets itself as lightweight, but hasn't been independently tested by major labs since around 2019, so we can't verify that claim with current data.
Can I run two antivirus programs at once?
Generally no -- two real-time scanners can conflict with each other. Malwarebytes is a notable exception, since it's specifically designed to run alongside a primary antivirus as a secondary on-demand scanner.
Antivirus vs internet security -- what is the difference?
Antivirus is the core malware-detection engine. Internet security suites add extras like a firewall, anti-phishing tools, parental controls, a VPN, or a password manager on top of that engine.
Is Kaspersky safe to buy?
Kaspersky cannot currently be purchased by U.S. consumers at all -- the U.S. Commerce Department banned its retail sale to U.S. persons effective September 29, 2024, and that ban remains in effect. It's included on this page for informational completeness, not as a purchase recommendation for U.S. readers.
Which antivirus has the strongest independent audit record?
Based on current lab data, Bitdefender has the most consistently strong results across both AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives, including multiple 'Product of the Year' awards. Norton, Malwarebytes, and ESET also have strong, recent, verifiable scores.
