The intruder took an expired security certificate key. There were no user activity logs on the machine to take. NordVPN didn’t disclose the incident until October 2019, and the delay drew heavy criticism. What it did afterwards shaped the service you’d buy today, which is why this NordVPN review starts with it.

We built this NordVPN review from primary material: NordVPN’s announcements of its audit results, the company’s own account of the 2018 breach and the independent reporting around it, the public code NordVPN has released, and pricing published by NordVPN and by several pricing trackers in September 2026. We haven’t run in-house speed or streaming tests, so we don’t quote other outlets’ Mbps figures as if they were ours.

One practical note on price: NordVPN charges different amounts in different regions and runs frequent promotions. Pricing trackers checked in the same month in 2026 reported slightly different figures, so we give ranges rather than a single number.

The 2018 Breach, and What Changed After It

The details matter, so here they are. The compromised server belonged to a data center provider in Finland. The provider had installed a remote management system that NordVPN didn’t know about, and the attacker used it to get in. According to NordVPN’s own account, and reporting by TechCrunch at the time, the attacker obtained an expired TLS key but no usernames, passwords or activity records, because none were stored on the server.

Two criticisms were fair. NordVPN learned of the breach in April 2019 and waited until October to say anything publicly, after the story had begun to circulate online. And it had trusted a hosting partner’s setup without checking it closely enough.

The response was substantial. NordVPN ended the contract with the Finnish provider, moved its network to RAM-only servers that keep nothing after a reboot, opened a public bug bounty, and committed to repeated outside audits. Most of what makes NordVPN trustworthy today dates from that period.

A breach handled badly and then fixed properly doesn’t prove a company is safe. It does show how it behaves under pressure, which is worth more than a spotless marketing page.

Six No-Logs Assessments in Eight Years

PwC reviewed NordVPN’s no-logs claims in 2018 and 2020. Deloitte took over in 2022 and has repeated the work in 2023, 2024 and 2025. NordLynx and the Server Network

NordLynx is NordVPN’s version of WireGuard. Plain WireGuard needs to remember which user holds which internal IP address while connected. NordVPN added a double network address translation system on top, so the server doesn’t need to keep that link stored. You get WireGuard’s speed without that small privacy trade-off.

With more than 9,300 servers in 137 countries, the network is one of the largest available. That matters most when you want a less common country, or when you’re far from the usual hubs and need a server nearby.

Specialty servers cover the rest. Double VPN sends traffic through two countries. Onion Over VPN connects you to the Tor network without the Tor Browser. Obfuscated servers help on networks that block VPNs, and P2P servers are set up for torrenting. A dedicated IP address is available as a paid add-on for banking or work logins that dislike shared addresses.

Four Plans, and Which Extras Are Worth It

NordVPN sells four main tiers. Every plan includes the full VPN, the whole server network and ten devices. The differences are the bundled extras.

In October 2026, NordVPN’s own pricing page listed the 2-year Basic plan at $3.49 a month ($94.23 for the first 27 months, then $139.08 a year) and month-to-month Basic at $14.99, with the higher tiers costing progressively more. All plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, and prices go up at renewal, so check the renewal rate before you commit.

Our advice: start with Basic unless you already know you’ll use an extra. If you want a password manager, Plus is a fair deal. Meshnet, which links your own devices into a private network for remote access and file sharing, nearly disappeared. NordVPN announced in 2025 that it would retire the feature, then reversed course after complaints from users and said it would keep it and open its code. It’s a niche tool, but a good one if you need to reach a home computer while travelling.

Settings Worth Changing on Day One

NordVPN works out of the box, but a few minutes in the settings make it noticeably safer. First, confirm the protocol is set to NordLynx, which is usually the default and the fastest option. Then turn on the kill switch. NordVPN offers two kinds: one that cuts all internet traffic if the VPN drops, and an app kill switch that closes only the programs you pick, such as a browser or torrent client.

Next, set auto-connect so the VPN switches on whenever you join an unfamiliar network. That’s the setting that protects you on public Wi-Fi, where most people forget to connect manually. On Windows and Android, split tunneling lets banking apps or local streaming services bypass the VPN if they object to it.

Finally, leave obfuscated servers off unless you need them. They’re slower and only useful on networks that actively block VPNs.

NordVPN is registered in Panama, which has no law forcing VPN providers to keep logs and isn’t part of the Five, Nine or Fourteen Eyes groups. Combined with RAM-only servers and the audits, that makes it hard for anyone to obtain activity data that NordVPN doesn’t hold in the first place.
