This NordVPN vs Surfshark comparison starts here: the two aren’t quite the rivals they look like. Since 2022, both have belonged to the same parent group, Nord Security, after Surfshark merged with Nord Security’s holding company. Each keeps its own apps and its own server network, and this comparison treats them as the two distinct products they are, but it’s worth knowing before you read too much into the “vs.”

The short version: NordVPN has the bigger network, a longer audit history and more specialty servers. Surfshark costs less and covers unlimited devices on one account. Neither is faster than the other in any way we can honestly measure without running our own tests, which we haven’t.

A Note on Speed Claims

Older versions of this page quoted specific speed numbers for each provider, in Mbps, city by city. SecureGuides never ran those tests. We’ve removed them rather than leave invented figures on the page. Both providers currently ship a WireGuard-based protocol (NordLynx for NordVPN, standard WireGuard for Surfshark, alongside its newer Dausos option), and independent reviewers generally place the two close together, with NordVPN’s larger network sometimes giving it an edge on distant servers. Surfshark is cheaper on every term, and the device difference compounds that gap. A family of four on NordVPN fits inside the 10-device limit without much room to spare once you count laptops, phones and a smart TV. The same family on Surfshark pays less per month and never has to log a device out to add another. If your household has more than a handful of devices, Surfshark’s advantage here isn’t close.

NordVPN’s higher tiers bundle a password manager, cloud storage or identity protection depending on the plan. Surfshark’s One and One+ tiers add antivirus and a data-removal service. Neither is a reason to pick one VPN over the other unless you’d actually use the extra, since both are available as separate products elsewhere too.

NordVPN has gone through six assessments since 2018, first with PwC and then with Deloitte, most recently for a period ending in December 2025. Both run RAM-only servers, so a reboot clears everything on the machine. NordVPN’s Linux app has been open source since 2023; the rest of both providers’ apps are closed source and rely on the audits instead.

NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro filters ads, trackers and known malware domains at the DNS level and scans downloads; Surfshark’s CleanWeb does the same job for ads, trackers and malicious sites, plus cookie pop-ups. Neither replaces a real antivirus, and both are included free rather than gated behind a higher tier.

Both include a kill switch on every major platform, so your traffic doesn’t leak onto your normal connection if the VPN drops. NordVPN offers split tunneling on Windows and Android but not macOS; Surfshark’s version, called Bypasser, covers the same core platforms. If you specifically need to exempt an app or site from the VPN on a Mac, check the current platform support on each provider’s site before buying, since this is one of the areas most likely to change between app updates.

Surfshark also bundles Alternative ID, which generates a throwaway name, email address and phone number for sign-ups, keeping spam and data breaches away from your real details. NordVPN doesn’t have a direct equivalent built into the VPN app itself.

Streaming

Both are widely reported to unblock Netflix and other major platforms across several regions, and both have built-in features to route streaming traffic automatically (SmartPlay for NordVPN, no manual server-picking needed on Surfshark either). The Renewal Trap Applies to Both

Whichever one you pick, the advertised price is an introductory rate, not what you’ll pay long-term. NordVPN’s monthly rate for Basic is $14.99, several times its 2-year rate, and both providers renew subscriptions automatically at a higher price than the first term unless you cancel it. Surfshark’s monthly Starter price is similarly steep at $16.45.

The practical fix is the same for both: buy the longest term you’re confident you’ll want, and set a reminder a month before it renews. That gives you time to compare the current offer against switching, rather than being auto-charged the higher rate by default.

A Quick Way to Decide

If you’re still unsure, count your devices first. Above about eight, Surfshark’s unlimited policy and lower price make the decision easy on their own.
